Lot Essay

Despite extensive research at Lloyd's register, this vessel's identity so far remains enigmatic. No Captain John Willins has been traced - suggesting a possible error in the transcription of the name (perhaps from Williams?) - whilst the artist's erroneous description of the George as a 'Ship' when she is, in fact, barque-rigged only serves to make identification even more difficult given the numbers of sailing vessels of that same name recorded for the year 1820.
