Nicolaes Janszoon Visscher (1649-1702)

Atlas Minor sive Geographia Compendiosa qua orbis Terrarum. Amsterdam: [c.1683]. 2° (535 x 310mm). Letterpress title [see Koeman Vis II], 26 hand-coloured double-page engraved maps by the Visschers, Jansson, and Blaeu. (Some light marginal spotting and staining several clean tears at lower folds, old repairs and loss to the outer margins of the map of South America and the Germania interior map.) Contemporary panelled calf with central gilt arabesques, silver cornerpieces and clasps, (hinges cracked, edges lightly rubbed, the spine restored at head).

An attractive Visscher atlas, probably bound as purchased. The Atlas Minor of Nicolaes Visscher II took over from the Atlas Contractus published by his father. This copy has considerably few maps than Koeman Vis II but does use the same title; but in many respects these atlases were composite in nature, with pulls from various maps by Blaeu, Jansson and others often included. The assemblage here follows a natural geographical order ending up with the Americas. It includes fine maps by Visscher of the world (Shirley 406), Asia, South East Asia, Africa, and the Americas (Burden 332 state 2, c.1677), as well as North America by Jansson, and the Ottoman Empire by De Wit. cf. Koeman III Vis II.
