Hand-coloured engraved map of Asia, (368 x 484mm). Title set in decorative cartouche at lower left, seas decorated with galleons. (Light browning.) Window mount. -- Chinae, olim Sinarum regionis, nova descriptio, auctore Ludovico Georgio. [Amsterdam:] 1584. Hand-coloured engraved map of China, (364 x 463mm). Title set in elaborate cartouche surmounted by two putti in lower left corner, privilege and scale bar set in two further decorative cartouches. Window mount.
Two decorative maps of Asia and China from Ortelius's important world atlas Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the Asia map based on Ortelius's own wall map of Asia printed in 1567. It includes Japan in an almost recognisable form, although incorrectly orientated in the manner of Ruscelli from Jesuit sources. The map became the standard map of Asia for more than forty years. Ortelius's map of China, the first to appear in a European atlas, '... remained the standard type for the interior of China for over sixty years' (Tooley). Based on a manuscript map made by the Portuguese Jesuit, Ludovicus Georgius, Ortelius's first map appeared in the Additamentum III to his Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. (2)
