Otto Dix moved to Dresden in the Autumn of 1909 with a scholarship to study at the School of Arts and Crafts. His training focused exclusively on the techniques and motifs required for interior decoration; an influence which is reflected in the pattern of the present object.
Dix was nineteen years old when he gave this wooden box as a Christmas present to Helene Jakob in 1910, the daughter of the Academy's caretaker.
