PADUA. Two manuscript account books of a monte di pietá in Padua, in Italian, 1491-1502,
the first a detailed daybook of pledges, usually of silver, jewels or cloth, against quantities of grain supplied, October 1491 - July 1492, together with entries recording the redemption of the pledges; and a list of the 'Cassa de dare', December 1491 - January 1495, together 42 leaves, large folio (430 x 287mm), plus blanks (heavy water staining at upper margin leading to erosion of upper right corner, with loss of text), vellum wrappers (eroded) within later boards;
the second a further ledger of running expenses, including payments of salaries, building work and alms, June 1499 - September 1502, the accounts being submitted to the conservadore of the monte by Daniele di Musati, Hierolumo di Obici[?] and Zumbattista Talamaro, notary, appointed by the Maggior Consiglio of Padua, 23 leaves, 4to, plus blanks (water staining leading to some erosion of upper margin throughout, with loss of text on parts of six leaves), stitched, fragment of vellum wrapper inscribed 'Merced. expensa[ ] Domorum Affictuum';
together with two related documents, the first a copy of a pronouncement issued by Piero Barroccio, Bishop of Padua, September 1491, in Latin, setting terms of operation, 1½ pages, folio, the second a receipt for a pledge, 3 June 1492, in Italian, one page, small 4to;

ASSISI. Manuscript on paper, seven texts issued by the gonfaloniere Guillelmo Caruli and the priors and leading citizens of Assisi, relating principally to the conclusion of a truce ['lega'] with the Perugians, [1376], in Latin, comprising: (i) a commission to the two delegates to conclude a truce with the Perugians, 'causa augendi manutenendi & construandi libertatem & pacificum statum communis & populi dicte civitatis Assisi' [for the purpose of increasing, maintaining and building the freedom and peaceful condition of the comune and people of the said city of Assisi], (ii) a series of letters of credentials for their ambassador, Scholarus Zoli, addressed to officials at the papal court and others, complaining of the damage done by the Perugians to the state of Assisi, including 'fires, pillaging, kidnapping, and murder', (iii) a petition to the Pope, complaining of the 'scandolosos mores' and other offences including 'homicidas scandalosos et nephanda scelera', of the Bishop of Assisi, Fr Thomas de Amelia, and asking that for the general benefit he be transferred 'ad aliam maiorem & dictiorem Ecclesiam' [to another larger and richer church], and that Assisi be supplied with a more suitable replacement; the documents contemporary transcripts, certified at conclusion by Nofrius Mathioli and Mattheus Luti, one leaf a draft of one of the texts, altogether seven leaves (one a fragment), folio, disbound;

Ghibhelline Assisi was perpetually in a state of conflict with Guelfish Perugia, only 17 miles away, and was in fact sacked by Perugia with the assistance of papal troops in 1442. (9)
