One of the most popular and best documented types of Company Painting flourished at Patna, the capital of Bihar. 1800 saw an increase in prosperity in the area as British factories flourished exporting sugar, indigo, cotton, opium and musk and as a result there was a great demand for Company School paintings from the visiting business men and their families. The Patna style of painting flourished between 1815 and 1840 when vast sets depicting Indian everyday life were produced for western patrons to take home.
