This picture illustrates Renfrew's second royal castle. It was built in the 13th Century on the mainland overlooking the King's Inch and the Sand Inch. Between 1377 and 1401 King Robert III held court at the castle on a number of occasions, and the castle saw several other royal visitors including King James IV who did penance within its walls for the slaying of his father at the Battle of Flodden. Renfrew Castle finished its days rather ignomiously as a soap works and in 1710 the castle was purchased by John Paterson, the Provost of Renfrew. The industrial town of Clydebank can be seen in the distance.
