Lot Essay

The sitter of the present work was the cousin and muse of Comte Robert de Montesquiou-Fezensac (1855-1921), a prominent figure in the social, artistic, and intellectual circles of Paris. As a society beauty Comtesse Elizabeth Greffulhe made a great impression on Proust who used her as the basis for one of his characters in L'indifférent.
