FIRST EDITION. The map was originally published in 1838, then several times and in several reports thereafter. The map was drawn by M.H. Stansbury, after an 1834 map of British North America by Arrowsmith, to accompany a report "urging the President to occupy Oregon Territory." Pendleton was aide-de-camp on the staff of General Edmund Pendleton Gaines from 1813-1815 (War of 1812), and a representative of the state of Ohio to the 27th Congress.
