RAREST PENFOLDS GRANGE
The 'Grange Hermitage', of Penfolds is a vinous masterpiece, hugely popular with collectors. The wine was started by Penfold’s chief winemaker; Max Schubert, who gained his position when he was just 33, after having joined the company as the messenger boy 17 years prior. After a 1950 investigational trip to Europe, Schubert set out to make a wine of his own to rival European fine wines. In 1951, Schubert's first experimental wine was made, using the Shiraz grape. 1952 was the first commercial release. Schubert was ordered to shut down the project, by the Board, in 1957. This only encouraged Shubert’s determination to succeed with the iconic wine and he continued with his Grange vintages in secret. 1958 is therefore a 'secret' vintage. In 1960, Penfolds asked Max to restart production of Grange, oblivious to the fact that he had never missed a vintage.
