Hammond Smith dates this drawing to circa 1818.
A related watercolour of a man on a donkey seen from behind was sold in these Rooms, 7 November 1995, lot 150 from Sir Geoffrey Harmsworth's collection. Harmsworth who organised the famous exhibition of de Wint's work at the Usher Gallery in 1937 formed an extensive collection of the artist's work, focussing on Lincolnshire views. The present watercolour left the collection before the Christie's sale in 1993.
