Lord Dover (1724-1792), third son of Philip Yorke, 1st Earl of Hardwicke, was created Baron Dover in 1788. He served on the Duke of Cumberland's staff during the Scottish rebellion and was present at Culloden in 1746. After 1749 he does not appear to have seen active service although attached to the 9th Foot Guards, 5th Dragoons and 1st Life Guards in turn but embarked upon a diplomatic career in Paris which later took him to The Hague. He was created a Knight of the Order of the Bath in 1761.
A variant of the present miniature was in the Stiassni Collection, sold Christie's, London, 5 November 1968, lot 37.
