[PIC NIC PAPERS]. DICKENS, Charles. The Lamplighter. A Farce... Now first printed from a manuscript in the Forster Collection at the South Kensington Museum. London: [Privately Printed], 1879.
8o (180 x 120 mm). (Lightly browned.) Original grey-blue printed paper wrappers (unevenly browned, small tear in lower wrapper); green cloth folding box. Provenance: Kenyon Starling (bookplate).
LIMITED EDITION, number 127 of 250 numbered copies. Originally written for Braham's St. James's Theatre as a vehicle for famously mercurial actor William Charles Macready, who eventually refused to perform the play even though it went through rehearsal. Dickens converted the storyline to The Lamplighter's Story, which was published in the Pic Nic Papers, 1841. This copy without the plate by F.W. Pailthorpe sometimes recorded. Eckel, p.162; Kitton pp. 210-213; Yale/Gimbel B80 (recording copies with and without the plate).
