Carlo Alberto's reign witnessed the growing strength of Italian nationalism. At various times in his career both as prince and king espousing a liberal policy of alliance with France, enmity with Austria and constitutional reforms he placed Savoy at the heart of the risorgimento and paved the way for his son, Vittorio Emanuele II, to complete the unification of Italy under a constitutional monarchy.
