PLATO (427?-347 B.C.). Opera quae extant omnia, in Greek with Latin translation by Jean de Serres, edited by Henri Estienne II, [Geneva:] Henri Estienne, 1578.
3 volumes, 2° (370 x 232mm). Text in Greek and Latin in parallel columns, woodcut printer's device (Schreiber 19) on title, ornamental initials, head- and tailpieces, shoulder notes. (Small ink stain on ***1 recto in vol. I, 4F6 with long but clean repaired tear, occasional light spotting.) Contemporary panelled calf gilt, contrasting morocco lettering-pieces (extremities lightly rubbed, rear cover of vol. III with small damage). Provenance: from SIR EDWARD BULWER LYTTON'S LIBRARY at Knebworth.
FIRST COMPLETE EDITION OF PLATO. An attractive copy of one of the finest and most important books published by Henri Estienne II (1540-98). Estienne prepared the Greek text himself collating the Aldine edition of 1513, two Basel editions (1534 and 1566), and the Louvain edition of 1531 for the Laws, as well as manuscripts. Conforming to high scholarly standards, he also commissioned a new Latin translation by Jean de Serres (1540-98), which Estienne then edited and revised himself. "For two centuries [Estienne's edition] remained the indispensable instrument of Platonic studies; to this day its pagination is universally accepted as the standard system of reference to the text of Plato" (Schreiber). Adams P1439; Schreiber 201. (3)
