POGGI, Mauro. Alfabeto di lettere iniziali. [Florence: circa 1730].

Oblong 2° (300 x 445mm.). Engraved throughout. 25 leaves; title within a rococo border of stylised foliage supporting seven putti holding various tools of the writing-masters art, 24 plates one for each letter of the alphabet (no J or W required), all by Lorenzo Lorenzi after Poggi and FINELY HAND-COLOURED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND (title cut to just outside plate mark and mounted to size, occasional small tears to blank margins, some inoffensive spotting, final leaf with slight crease and its lower margin reinforced on the verso). Old vellum (lightly soiled).

RARE. Poggi (b.1691) flourished in Florence in the first half of the 18th-century, but is known to have published only this work. The basis for each plate is a single cursive capital, but the final results are a tour-de-force of artistic imagination channeled into rococo exuberance involving animals, birds, mythological figures, flowers, fish, etc. 'Preziosa raccolta di una sorprendente ricchezza d'immaginazione.': Bonacini 1453.
