Second edition of vols. I-VIII (1776-84), first edition of the remaining vols. (1780-94). Following the expulsion of the Jesuits from Spain in 1769, Ponz was appointed to make a survey of their confiscated property. The travels he had to make throughout the country led him to publish the present work, the first detailed account of its monuments and works of art. Although left uncompleted at his death, posthumous volumes were edited by his nephew, and it became an essential source for British writers on Spain. Ponz also wrote a 2-volume Viage fuera de España (1785), not present here. Palau 231630 & 231626 (not giving a plate collation). (18)
