Arabic manuscript on paper, 29ff. each with 7ll. of bold black naskh within clouds on a gold ground, text outlined with red and blue rules, outer frame of pink and silver rules, headings in red and blue riqa', title page with gold, pink and blue headpiece and gold floral arabesque in margins, final folio with colophon with dedication to al-Khaqan Kamal al-Din Khwajar Muhammad and signed Fakhhar Husayn and dated 993, red and black lacquer binding - folio 8 x 5 3/8in (20.5 x 13.5cm)

Lot Essay

Husayn al-Fakhhar al-Shirazi is the calligrapher of a Qur'an dated AH 972 (1564-5 AD) copied in Shiraz in the Khalili collection. He is mentioned in Qadi Ahmad's treatise on Safavid calligraphers and painters and is known to have copied other prayer books.
