AN IMPORTANT BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA SHAKYAMUNI
THAILAND, AYUTTAYA PERIOD, KAMPAENG PHET, 15TH-16TH CENTURY

拍品专文

This impressive life-size bronze statue of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni perfectly epitomises his blissful state of perfection and compassion. His face shows a serene expression with half-closed eyes, long aquiline nose, well-defined lips, elongated earlobes and small hair curls. All these facial elements are characteristic for the earlier phase of Buddhist art of the Ayutthaya period. This kingdom was founded in 1350 and remained one of the most powerful states in Southeast Asia until its destruction by the Burmese in 1767 AD. Its city of Kamphaeng Phet was known for foundries that produced Buddhist bronzes of the highest and finest quality during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Based on the high technical quality, stylized facial features and small hair curls of the presented bronze Buddha it is not to be excluded that the statue originates from Kamphaeng Phet or one of the foundries in its vicinity.
