Provenance: Eliza Buchanan (several inscriptions); later inscriptions by members of the Buchanan family. Beneath her inscription to the cookery section, Eliza Buchan has also written: "Eliza Buchan came to Peterg. to live June 1st 1788." A grand-daughter has written beneath: "Elizabeth Buchanan was my paternal grandmother -- D. W. R. Buchanan. She was a daughter of William of Mount Alta Virginia U.S. A. She died at Brighton 23rd July 1800 aged 29." Eliza Buchanan would therefore have written or at least commenced the receipt book at the age of 17 or 18, presumably when living at Petersburg in the United States.
