A reference is made on a label on the reverse of the present painting to one entitled The Rescue from the Coming Storm and to its sale in 1909. This work, measuring 30 x 50 in. was sold at Christie's on 27 March 1909, lot 1 and again 28 November 1952, lot 113. When this larger work was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1868, the critic of the Art Journal commented:
'R. Ansdell, A.R.A., perhaps the hardest worker of the Academy, produces five pictures, powerful and effective, after his pronounced manner.'
It is possible that the present work is a study for this Royal Academy exhibit.
We are grateful to Peter Ansdell for his help in the preparation of this catalogue entry.
