Lot Essay

In a critique of the 1853 Royal Academy exhibition, the reviewer describes the present picture as such, 'On the rocky crest of a hill we see a ewe and two lambs... the ewe courageously faces [an eagle] in defence of her offspring. The incident is touching and beautifully set forth. The fierce bird and animals are portrayed with great spirit'.
