The present watercolour, included in a sale at Fischer in Lucerne in the 1940s was copied by Thomas Shotter Boys in 1829 (see Sotheby's, London, 3 April 1996, lot 174, illustrated). A drawing in the British Museum by Boys shows the interior of Bonington's studio in Paris with views of Venice on the easel and propped up against the walls.

Bonington visited Venice in 1826 and produced some of his finest work in the city. The present watercolour was probably executed on the spot in 1826. Bonington's watercolours of Venice bear the date 1826 or 1827, the latter executed from sketches as he only went to Venice once.
