The photographs by Roger Fenton in this and the following two lots together comprise one of the most complete collections of his Crimean War studies extant. Despite attempts by many to provide a definitive list of titles, it is still uncertain how many prints made up the whole series, although publishers' lists of the time cited 337 subjects as complete. Gernsheim, in his Incunabula counts 360, and Hannavy states that 360 were shown to the Emperor Napoleon III, when Fenton and William Agnew presented a selection to him in September 1855. The collection offered here contains (in three lots) a total of 289 prints including approximately eight duplicates.
The photographs were offered in a series of parts, in which a group of 160 subjects was described as the "Complete Work" or the "Entire Work" in the catalogues of the commissioners and publishers, Agnew's and the auctioneers, Southgate & Barrett. The latter firm was responsible for auctioning six sets in November 1856. In addition to these 160 plates, four other groups were offered, apparently with the following titles Scenery, Views of the Camp, &c. (50 photographs); Incidents of Camp Life (60 photographs); Historical Portrait Gallery (30 photographs); and Panorama of the Plateau before Sebastopol (11 photographs). These were sold in red portfolios with gilt titles as seen in this collection. It would appear that although the number of photographs per part was fixed it was up to the individual buyer to select the particular choice of subjects. Although not included in this list, at least one other titled volume Photographs of the Seat of War in the Crimea appeared which included both portraits and views. The photographs were also available singly, at prices from 10/6 to one guinea.

The ink manuscript titles and numbers on the backs of the mounts of many of the photographs in the present collection are thought to be in Fenton's hand. Certainly, the numbering does not correspond with that on the published lists and the absence of the publisher's printed credits and titles in most instances would suggest that these prints may have been compiled by Fenton himself. The titles generally match those from the published lists, but often with less formality. For example the famous self-portrait of Roger Fenton is listed as A Zouave of the 2nd Division with the Cloak of a Russian Officer taken at Kertch whereas the manuscript caption for this image is simply With the cloak of a Russian officer taken at Kertch suggesting a greater intimacy with the subject.

The prints have been ordered in the portfolios in recent years according to the subjects in the list of the printseller Alexander Hill of Edinburgh (brother of D. O. Hill). This system has tended to mix images which are portraits with those which might be considered "Incidents" within each portfolio. Pencil reference numbers corresponding with this list have been added. Of the thirty prints which are loose only one has a printed title Cantiniere, and this does not correspond with any of the titles on the published list. Nine of the others have handwritten titles on the backs, and a few, like those in the volumes, have a title added in a later hand in pencil.

Among the many portraits of British and French military leaders and officers are studies of Major Stuart Wortley and Captain Verschoyle of the Grenadier Guards, each of whom was to become a photographer of considerable reputation. Other portraits include Croat chiefs, Zouave soldiers, the war artist William Simpson, and the Fenton self-portrait as a Zouave. The study of Marcus Sparling sitting on top of Fenton's photographic van provides a poignant reminder of the extreme conditions under which the photographs were produced. This converted van was Fenton's mobile darkroom as well as his living quarters, in which he prepared and processed over three hundred wet collodion glass negatives often in excessive heat, and, at times in dangerous circumstances. Fenton himself described that because the van was painted white it was mistaken for a munitions store and frequently shelled.

For Fenton's own detailed account of his visit to the Crimea, see Hannavy, Roger Fenton of Crimble Hall, chapter 5, which reproduces the text of his Narrative of a Photographic Trip to the Seat of War in the Crimea delivered before a meeting of the Photographic Society in January 1856.
