The present watch shows a rather unusual signature, featuring the "Oyster" on the second or middle line, between the designations Rolex and Cosmograph. Scholarship amongst collectors suggests that this version of the "Oyster Paul Newman" dial was only used for reference 6240, a variant of the Oyster Cosmograph series made in smaller numbers than references 6263 and 6265.

A similar example of reference 6240 with black "Rolex Oyster Cosmograph Daytona" dial is described and illustrated in I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda, Pucci Papaleo Editore, pp. 306 & 307.
