Rolex introduced its Explorer model in 1953 and developed a string of successive references, including references 6098, 6150 and 6350, amongst others. Reference 1016 appeared in Rolex catalogues as of 1962 and came either with calibre 1560 or calibre 1570. One of Rolex's most popular sports watches, the Explorer is easily recognizable by its black dial with the luminous triangle at 12, luminous Arabic numerals for the other three quarters and luminous baton numerals for the remaining hours.
