Parshley, of Valhall, N.Y.; Washington, D.C., 12 August 1914. 1 page, 4o, boldly penned in blue ink, on Assistant Secretary of the Navy stationery, fine. An early FDR ALS, penned in his boldest possible hand. The future President, an autograph collector himself, complies with a request: "I take great pleasure in complying with your request." The Secretary of the Navy at the time, Josephus Daniels (1862-1948), with the aid of Franklin D. Roosevelt as Assistant Secretary (1913-1920), directed the naval effort during World War I. As Assistant Secretary, Roosevelt was keen for U.S. entry into the war, and drew up war contingency plans as early as 1913.
