Contemporary red half leather and printed cloth sides, by A. Ek of St. Petersburg with his stamp, sides tooled and lettered in gilt, white moiré silk doublures (extremities rubbed). Provenance: Grand Duchess Mariia Aleksandrovna (1853-1920; binding; Veste Coburg bookplate with shelf-mark '26/10').
GRAND DUCHESS MARIIA ALEKSANDROVNA'S COPY. Nicholas visited Sterlitamak as Tsarevich during his famed journey to the Far East. This group of works, including one commemorating Nicholas surviving the assassination attempt in Japan, was presented by the author to Grand Duchess Mariia, and extra-illustrated with three striking photographs of Rostovtsev carrying an icon in various settings. Mariia was eldest daughter of Alexander II, aunt of Nicholas II, and later Duchess of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Cf. Davis, Dark Mirror. New York: 1999, p. 157.
