2 volumes in one, 2° (467 x 326mm). 171 mezzotint plates. (Occasional very light offsetting and spotting.) FIRST EDITION OF A RARE WORK ON INDIAN FISH. This was Russell's third publication directly relating to his efforts to persuade the East India Company to fund such ventures. He wrote the preface to the Plants of the Coast of Coromandel (1795) by William Roxburgh (see lot 47) before publishing his Account of Indian Serpents collected on the Coast of Coromandel (1796) with the plates by Company servants (see previous lot). The present work was to be Russell's last, and it too was published 'by order of the court of directors' (title-page). 'The drawings were executed by a native of India, and by the advice of artists at home have undergone slight corrections. Some are by Heath, others by Neele and 2 or 3 by Skelton, but the greater part by Reeve' (preface). Nissen ZBI 3540.
