Lot Essay

The artist is not recorded. He might have been related to either J. Daems or L. Daems, for whom see J. de Maere, Illustrated Dictionary of 17th Century Flemish Painters, 1994, pp.121/2, and who were active in Antwerp in the first half of the 17th Century.
Style and subject of the present picture suggests that the artist was close to Hans Jordaens III.
