Henry Wellesley was the younger brother of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. He served in the British Army with the 1st Foot Guards after an earlier career as a diplomat. He joined his brothers Richard and Arthur in India c. 1799 as Richard's private secretary. A similar miniature of the present sitter painted by Samuel Andrews en grisaille was sold Christie's, London, 7 June 2011, lot 20.
