A painter of natural history and the younger brother of William Daniell (1769-1837) and nephew of Thomas Daniell (1749-1840), Samuel Daniell arrived in Ceylon in 1805, where he was appointed by the Governor to the post of 'Ranger of the Woods and Forest'. He remained on the island until his death there from tropical fever in 1811.
