Lot Essay

From 1904 Peploe made regular visits to France, often in the company of J D Fergusson. In Paris, Peploe was welcomed by Fergusson’s group of friends which included a number of American artists including Anne Estelle Rice. Peploe loved the bohemian lifestyle and the intellectual stimulus that Paris provided. He liked to sketch people at leisure in Luxembourg Gardens and - as is evident in the present work - exposed to fauve painting, Peploe’s technique became bolder and more experimental.
