3 volumes, 4° (282 x 220mm). Latin and German text. Half-titles, volumes I & II with mezzotint portraits of Schaeffer by Haid, the first after G.V. Mansinger, 280 hand-coloured engraved plates after Loibel and H. Fischer by J.N. Maag, H. Bock, G.P. Trautner, J.G. Fridrich and others. (Very occasional light spotting, notably affecting plates 238-9 but not touching images, small paper flaw to plate 219.) Maroon russia gilt by Delorme, with his ticket, flat spine in 6 compartments, lettered in the 2nd and 4th on green morocco lettering-pieces, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (light wear to corners, a few minor abrasions, upper board to vol. III lightly scuffed). Provenance: M. Gigot-d'Orcy (armorial bookplate inside each upper cover) -- early 19th century bookseller's note, 'extremely rare in this state, 11.11.0' (pencil inscription to front endpaper).
FIRST EDITION, IN A HANDSOME DELORME BINDING of Schaeffer's wide-ranging work on insects, presenting 280 varieties found in the local region of Regensburg. This copy has a distinguised provenance, once owned by Monsieur Gigot-d'Orcy (d.1793), celebrated for his patronage in the realm of natural history and entomology. In addition to his 'cabinet' and 'bibliothèque spécialisés de grande valeur' Gigot amassed one of the largest collections of minerals in Europe comprising over 4,000 specimens, which were acquired by the mineralogist George Gibbs and then given to Yale University.
