Born in 1926 in a village in Mount Lebanon, Shafic Abboud is one of the most prominent Lebanese modernists, contributing significantly to the history of abstract art in the region. Abboud first studied art at the Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts and then moved to Paris where he worked in the studios of Andre Lhote, Otton Friesz and Fernand Legar and attended classes at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Académie de la Grande Chaumière.

Throughout his life Abboud moved between Lebanon and Paris, considering both a home and drawing on his experiences and memories from these two places to create his abstract works. A master colourist, Abboud would carefully craft compositions of organic shapes painted in contrasting or complementary tones. In the present work, Abboud creates a composition using different gradients of the colour blue, evoking a feeling of serenity and calm that is reminiscent of when one looks up at the sky. Abboud often drew from his childhood and the landscapes of his memories, creating out of his compositions a documentation of a feeling or the light of a certain place or moment.
