Meteyard was one of the most important members of the Birmingham Group, who came to prominence in the 1890s and were heavily influenced by Burne-Jones. Like so many of these artists, he was extremely versatile, painting easel pictures, designing stained glass, enamel plaques and other forms of decorative work, and illustrating several books. As an illustrator, he is best known for his designs to Longfellow's Golden Legend, 1910.
