Lot Essay

'Night, Sleep, Death and the Stars, they are the themes that I love best', Solomon told Julia Elsworth Ford, his Amercian admirer and author of the first monograph on him, published in New York in 1908. Such vague symbolist concepts were to be the stock-in-trade of Solomon's late paintings and drawings. This head recalls the figure of Night in For the Night must Pass before the Coming Day, sold at Christie's London, 7 April 1998, lot 165 for 20,700.
