Hugh Wortham was the Peterborough column write in the Daily Telegraph, a close personal friend of Sir Alfred Munnings. The present work would appear to be a study for the frontispiece of volume two - A Second Burst - of the artist's autobiography. A similar design can also be seen in the background of a photograph of Munnings in his studio (fig. 1).
