Munnings often executed portrait commissions of dogs. He had his own dogs which he adored and frequently mentioned in his memoirs but he does not mention any of his canine commissions. Many of the compositions feature a dog sitting on a chair and all of the works are painted with care and tremendous sympathy. The present work shows how adept Munnings was at capturing the expression and personality of the animal.
