Report on the Scientific Results of the voyage of HMS Challenger during the years 1873-6. London, Edinburgh etc.: H.M.S.O. for Longman & Co. [and others], 1880-1895. 50 volumes only (of 51), large 4° (317 x 250mm.), and 4° (310 x 243mm.). Approximately 3,280 plates, charts and maps (most lithographic, many tinted, some coloured, some double-page or folding), numerous illustrations. (Lacking the second volume of the 'Narrative'.) Original green cloth gilt (47 vols) and later cloth (1 vol.), (some tears to spines, some stitching broken, some inner hinges split, occasional tears to joints).

PROVENANCE:
48 volumes: Hill Reference Library, St. Paul (perforated stamps to title, stamps, cancellation stamps, white-painted shelf marks on spines); 2 volumes of 'Narrative': OONL (presentation stamp from 'His Britannic Majesty's Government', cancellation stamp).

A NEAR-COMPLETE SET OF THE SCIENTIFIC RESULTS FROM THE CHALLENGER VOYAGE, INCLUDING THE 'NARRATIVE' OF THE VOYAGE. Amongst the many achievements of this through scientific exploration of the world's oceans were the earliest known photographs of Antarctic icebergs and peri-Antarctic islands; the Challenger was also the first steam-powered vessel to cross the Antarctic Circle (on 16 February 1874). The reports, published over a fifteen year period, concentrate on zoological matters, but most of the other disciplines are represented. The set is made up as follows:

1. Narrative, volume 1 only (of 2) in 2, 1885
2. A Summary of the Scientific Results, 2 volumes in 3, 1895
3. Botany, 2 volumes, 1885-1886
4. Deep-Sea Deposits, 1 volume, 1891
5. Physics and Chemistry, 2 volumes, 1884-1889
6. Zoology, 32 volumes in 40 (including 6 volumes of plates), 1880-1889.

According to the full entry in the BM(NH) catalogue, the missing volume contains '[Magnetic Observations by Naval Officers]', pp.viii, 744, dated 1882, and includes 2 appendices, the first of 42pp., the second of 29pp. BM(NH) II,p.716; Nissen BBI 2381; Nissen ZBI 4554; Spence 1198; Stafleu & Cowan II, 2,368.
