Half-title, errata slip, colour frontispiece, one folding map, 87 plates, illustrations. (Marginal browning to text as usual.) Original cloth, blocked in silver on upper cover and spine, lower cover blocked in blind with Heinemann device (spine and corners slightly rubbed). Provenance: Victor Middleton (early inscription 'Victor George Middleton/from his affectionate sister/Amy G. Drury./Xmas 1919').

FIRST EDITION, FIRST IMPRESSION of 'a classic and one of the finest [works] in ... Antarctic literature' (Rosove). A very good copy with the silver blocking on the cover un-oxidised. Conrad p.224; Rosove 308.A1 ('Uncommon.'); Spence 1107; Taurus 105 (incorrectly describing binding as blocked in gilt).
