SIR ERNEST HENRY SHACKLETON (1874-1922)
Autograph letter signed ('Ernest') to Cyril Longhurst, Edinburgh, [26 February 1904], 8 pages, 8vo, on bifolia, on paper with printed heading of Royal Scottish Geographical Society (of which Shackleton was secretary).
SHACKLETON'S IMPENDING MARRIAGE: the letter thanks Longhurst for agreeing to be his best man, 'It is awfully good of you coming along on the 12th as Best Man, there will be no trouble, I will arrange everything before, mind you don't laugh you rotter!! and for Heaven's sake don't lose the place in the book for prompting there is no letter box to hide in if you start laughing there'; the wedding will now take place at Christchurch, Westminster. The letter continues with news of the proceeds of an article [in Pearson's Magazine] which are to be donated to the Discovery relief fund, 'Don't let it be collared for a general fund', and of his plans for revivifying the R.S.G.S.: 'Strictly private this is; the old boys are gradually dropping out of the Council and we are getting younger men and so we will be able to do more and more ... I am pleased when an old blighter comes and says he must resign through ill health, he says it in a tone as if the world will now stand still'.
Shackleton's wedding to Emily Dorman, with Longhurst as best man, in fact seems to have taken place on 9 April (a Wednesday) rather than the 12th as anticipated here (see Huntford and ODNB). The wedding breakfast took place at the house of Sir Clements Markham.
