The sitter was the eldest son of Charles Stewart, 2nd Viscount Hardinge and Lavinia, daughter of the 3rd Earl of Lucan. Like his grandfather, Henry Hardinge, 1st Viscount Hardinge (see lot 43 for biographical details), the 3rd Viscount had a successful military career which culminated in his appointment as Commander-in-Chief in 1902. He married Mary, Frances, third daughter of the Hon. Ralph Neville.
