Details
SIR HENRY MORTON STANLEY (1841-1904)
Stanley's first lecture, Jefferson City, Missouri, 1866: a printed Lecture Bill, promoting a lecture by Stanley to take place in Jefferson City, Missouri -- "The American Traveler! Henry Stanley, Who was cruelly robbed by the Turks on September 18, 1866, and stripped by overwhelming numbers of his arms, passport, letter of credit, and over $4,000 in cash, will Lecture on his Travels and Adventures in Turkey, and Life in the Orient!!," [no publisher: no date], the bill laid down on card, the place and time of the lecture added in pencil (torn with slight loss, browned and creased), 300 x 223mm.

Following Stanley's unsuccessful travels in Turkey he returned with Noe to New York, and went on alone back to St. Louis. In mid-February 1867 he was in Jefferson City and as his friend and veteran civil war reporter, William Fayel relates "You recollect that cold bleak February night when you made your advent to the Tennessee House, full of your lecture on Turkey, and about $20 worth of tickets for admission" (Hall p.150). The lecture was a disaster, "Four deadheads and four who paid" attended. He soon moved on to work for the Missouri Democrat as paid correspondent on the Hancock Campaign against the Plains Indians.
