'The portrait of the American sculptress and friend of Picasso, Mary Callery, typifies Lavery's output in the 1920s. Dresses now were loose-fitting and were complemented by simple pearl necklaces. Similar hairstyles indicated the social freedom which women now enjoyed - particularly those visiting Europe from the new world'.
