Lot Essay

Little is known about the sitter. Edward Baines's Directory of Yorkshire, II, 1823, p. 399 lists a Richard Raines (or Raimes) Savage, presumably the father of the sitter, as a gentleman living at Wheldrake who appears to have been baptised on 24 February 1767.
