John Gilbert Talbot, M.P., D.C.L. (1835-1910), Politician, was the son of a Q.C. and was educated at Charterhouse School before becoming a Conservative Member of Parliament for West Kent (1868-78) and for Oxford University (1878-1910). Talbot was also Secretary to the Board of Trade under Lord Beaconsfield (1804-1881). He was a Justice of the Peace, County Councillor and Deputy-Lieutenant for Kent. Oxford University made him an Honorary D.C.L. for his contribution to discussions about Church matters. Talbot died in 1910. His family traced their descent and surname from the Norman Conquerors of England.
Full of zeal, he is always to be heard in any discussion affecting the Church.... He is not beautiful, but he is a very well-fitted representative of a great Conservative Institution.
