Clement Scott (1841-1904) was the dramatic critic and travel writer for the Daily Telegraph. The arrival of railways in the 19th Century opened up previously unknown areas of England. Londoners could now escape the bustle and stresses of city life; and so it was that travel writers also began to explore these hidden pockets of England. Scott wrote his well-known travel columns celebrating the countryside of Norfolk, dubbing it 'Poppyland' and thereby popularising the area that had become so dear to him.
