Lot Essay

The present picture relates to the fully autograph version in the Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery. There are other versions in the Pitti, Florence and the National Gallery of Ireland all of which are more likely to relate to the miniature of the sitter by Samuel Cooper (Buccleuch & Queensberry Collection) rather than having been painted ad vivum
