By 1952, the nene or Hawaiian goose, was nearly extinct due to the introduction of predators such as the mongoose and cats - only 30 were believed to still be on the islands. However, due to the conservation efforts of Sir Peter Scott and the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, their numbers in the wild are now up to 800, with 1000 in captivity.
